What is the Lock Washer (247665) and what does it do?

This lock washer secures a threaded fastener against loosening under vibration and thermal cycling. Fitted beneath the nut or bolt head, it bites into the bearing surface to keep clamping tension across the joint so the fastener doesn't back off in service.

Where is this lock washer used on the engine?

It's used throughout engine assembly on the 2.25 and 2.5 litre Series and Defender engines, including the 200Tdi, wherever a bolted joint must stay tight under vibration. It fits Series 1, 2, 2A and 3, Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.

Can the lock washer be reused or should it be replaced?

Replace the lock washer once it's been removed. A used washer that's already bitten into a surface and taken a set won't lock as effectively second time around, so it's worth fitting a fresh one whenever the joint is disturbed.
