The inner pinion bearing is a taper-roller bearing that supports the inner end of the differential pinion shaft in the Salisbury rear axle. It carries the drive and thrust loads from the pinion and sets its running position against the crown wheel. Fitted to the Salisbury heavy-duty axle.
Which vehicles use this Salisbury pinion bearing?
This inner pinion bearing fits the Salisbury rear axle on the Defender 110 and 130 from 1983 to 2006, the Defender 90 from 1995 model year, and the Series III. Confirm your axle is the Salisbury heavy-duty type before ordering, as the standard Rover axle uses a different bearing.
Why does the pinion bearing need replacing?
The inner pinion bearing wears as it carries the axle drive and thrust loads over high mileage, and a failing taper-roller bearing typically produces a rumble or whine from the rear axle that changes with speed. On the Salisbury axle it is usually renewed as part of a differential rebuild.
