Frequently asked questions

What is the valve cup used for?
The valve cup seats on top of the valve stem and caps the valve spring, held in place by the split collets to hold the spring under compression. It's used in the valve gear of the 2.25L petrol and 2.0L diesel engines. Fits Land Rover Series 2 and 3 and early Defender. Supplied as a single OEM cup.
Is this for single-groove or multi-groove valves?
This valve cup is for single-groove valve stems, used on the 3-bearing 2.25L engine up to 1984. Later multi-groove valves take a different cup and collets, so check which valve type your engine has before ordering. Mixing single and multi-groove parts won't retain the valve correctly.
How many valve cups do I need?
Typically one valve cup is needed per valve, so a full set usually means eight on the 4-cylinder 2.25L engine. Order the matching single-groove collets at the same time. Replace any cups showing wear or grooving during a head or valve overhaul.
