Frequently asked questions

What does the mechanical fuel pump 549761 do on a Land Rover 2.25L petrol engine?
The fuel pump 549761 is a camshaft-driven mechanical lift pump that draws fuel from the tank and delivers it to the carburettor via diaphragm action. It fits 2.25L petrol engines on Series 2, 3, and Defender up to 2016, and is supplied complete with an integral glass sediment bowl.
What causes mechanical fuel pumps to fail on Land Rover 4-cylinder petrol engines?
Diaphragm failure is the most common cause, allowing fuel pressure to drop below the level needed to feed the carburettor. Hardened pump valves and a cracked glass sediment bowl are also typical failure points on older pumps fitted to Series and Defender 2.25L petrol engines.
Can the glass sediment bowl on this fuel pump be inspected without removing the pump?
The glass bowl is fitted to the underside of the pump body and is typically accessible without removing the pump. A darkened or water-contaminated bowl is a sign that the bowl seal should be renewed and the diaphragm checked at the same time.
