Frequently asked questions

What is the Handbrake Expander used for?
The Handbrake Expander operates the transmission-mounted drum handbrake, forcing the brake shoes apart against the drum when you pull the handbrake. It converts the cable's pull into outward shoe movement, so the parking brake holds. This is the later type, retained by a spring clip rather than bolts.
Where is the Handbrake Expander fitted on the vehicle?
The Handbrake Expander sits inside the transmission drum handbrake at the rear of the gearbox, not at the wheels. It's part of the parking brake, acting on the drum at the transfer output. It works with the brake shoes and the handbrake cable.
What are the signs the Handbrake Expander needs replacing?
Typically the Handbrake Expander needs replacing when the parking brake won't hold or feels weak even after the cable is adjusted. Wear or seizure in the expander stops it pushing the shoes out fully. On these drum handbrakes it's a common cause of a failing parking brake.
Which Land Rover models does this Handbrake Expander fit?
This Handbrake Expander fits Land Rover Series 2 and 2A (the later type held by a spring clip, not bolts) and Series 3 with the 2.25 petrol or 2.6 six-cylinder petrol engine. Confirm you need the later spring-clip type before ordering.
