Frequently asked questions

What does the speedometer drive cable do?
The speedometer drive cable transmits drive from the gearbox speedometer take-off to the speedometer head in the dashboard. An inner cable spins inside an outer sheath, turning the speedometer in proportion to road speed. This one is for right-hand-drive Series III with the 2.25 petrol engine.
Which vehicle is this RHD 2.25 petrol cable for?
This speedometer cable is for right-hand-drive Land Rover Series III with the 2.25 litre petrol engine. Cable length and routing differ between left- and right-hand drive and between engines, so a left-hand-drive or different-engine version won't fit correctly. Match your drive side and engine before ordering.
Why does a speedometer cable fail?
A speedometer cable usually fails when the inner cable frays or snaps, or the outer sheath kinks, giving a jumpy needle, a whirring noise, or a dead speedometer. Lubricating the inner cable on fitting and routing it without tight bends helps a new cable last on Series III.
Can this be fitted at home?
Fitting a speedometer cable is typically a DIY job. The cable screws to the back of the speedometer head and to the gearbox take-off, then routes through the bulkhead. The main challenge is reaching behind the dash and feeding the cable through without kinking it. No special tools are usually needed.
