This switch fits R380 manual gearbox applications only. On the Defender it covers 1987-2006 with the R380 manual. Discovery 1 from VIN FA393361 onwards and Discovery 2 (1998-2004) are covered, as is the Range Rover P38 (1994-2001). Automatic-gearbox vehicles don't use this switch.

What are the signs the reverse light switch has failed?

The most common symptom is reverse lamps staying off when reverse gear is engaged. The switch can also fail closed, keeping the lamps permanently on. On the R380 gearbox, the switch typically fails through oil contamination or mechanical wear of the actuator plunger.
