What is the ERC5708 viscous unit?
The ERC5708 is a viscous fan coupling for the cooling system. It drives the engine cooling fan and uses a temperature-sensitive silicone fluid to speed the fan up when the engine is hot and let it freewheel when cold.

What are the signs a viscous coupling has failed?
A failing viscous coupling typically causes overheating if it seizes weak, or a constant roaring fan and poor fuel economy if it locks up. If the fan spins freely with the engine cold, the coupling has usually lost its fluid.
How is it fitted?
The coupling sits between the water pump and the fan and threads or bolts on, so a large spanner or the correct fan tool is usually needed to release it. Note the thread can be left-hand on some fittings.
