What is the ERC8861 timing belt tensioner for?

It tensions the camshaft timing belt on the 2.5L 4-cylinder diesel engine. The pulley presses against the belt to hold it taut, keeping valve and injection-pump timing accurate and preventing the belt from skipping teeth.

Do I need to fit a new tensioner when changing the timing belt?

Replace the tensioner at the same time as the timing belt every time. Its bearing wears with use, so reusing an old tensioner with a new belt risks premature failure and another strip-down.
