What is the power steering belt for?
The power steering belt is a multi-rib polyvee belt that turns the power-assisted steering pump. Driven off the crankshaft pulley through the auxiliary drive, it keeps the PAS pump spinning so the steering stays light. A failed belt means a sudden loss of steering assistance.
How do I know when this steering belt is worn?
A worn steering belt often gives a squeal when you turn the wheel, visible cracks or shiny glazing across the ribs, or heavy steering as it slips on the pulley. Rubber belts harden and crack with age, so inspect it during routine engine servicing.
Does this belt drive anything other than the steering pump?
No, this belt drives only the power-assisted steering pump on these engines. The alternator, water pump and cooling fan run on their own separate belts. Make sure the belt you need is the PAS pump drive, not another auxiliary belt, before ordering.
