What does the FTC3179 Front Hub Lock Washer do?

The FTC3179 prevents the bearing retaining nut from backing off on the front stub axle, maintaining correct preload on the front wheel bearing. A tab on the washer is folded against the nut face after torquing to lock it in position on the Defender, Discovery 1, and Range Rover Classic.

Should the FTC3179 lock washer be reused when rebuilding the front hub?

No — the tab is bent during assembly and a used washer cannot reliably lock the nut. Replace this lock washer every time the front hub is disassembled for bearing replacement, halfshaft removal, or hub overhaul.

Which Defender variants use the FTC3179 rather than the earlier hub lock washer?

The FTC3179 fits Defender from VIN LA930456 onwards. Defenders built before that VIN use a different outer hub lock washer. The same VIN floors apply on Discovery 1 (from JA032851) and Range Rover Classic (from JA610294 / JA624517).
