Aftermarket Part

Frequently asked questions

What is the steering lever (drop arm) and what does it do?
The steering lever, or drop arm, clamps onto the splined output shaft of the Adwest power steering box and links to the drag link through its tapered ball joint. It converts the rotary output of the steering box into the side-to-side movement that steers the front wheels. This one is for right-hand-drive vehicles.
Does this drop arm come with the ball joint fitted?
Yes, this drop arm is supplied with the ball joint already fitted, so it's renewed as a complete unit. The tapered ball joint is the part that wears and lets play into the steering, so replacing the lever as an assembly restores the connection without pressing in a separate joint.
How do I know if the steering drop arm needs replacing?
A worn drop arm ball joint typically shows as free play or vagueness in the steering, knocking from the joint, or wander on the road. Because the ball joint is integral, play at this point means the whole lever is renewed. It's a steering component, so have it checked if play increases.
Which Land Rovers does this RHD steering lever fit?
This right-hand-drive drop arm fits the Defender (1987-2016), Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (1970-1994) with the Adwest power steering box. It's RHD-specific, so it won't suit a left-hand-drive box. Confirm your box is the Adwest unit before ordering.
