Oil & Water Temperature Sensor threads into the engine and reports lubricant or coolant temperature to the engine management system and the instrument gauge.

This is a sensor rather than a switch. Its resistance varies continuously with temperature to produce a measurement signal, where a thermal switch only opens or closes a circuit at one fixed set point.

Used as an oil temperature sensor on the M62 4.4 V8 petrol and M57 3.0 diesel, mounted above the water pump, and as an engine oil temperature sensor on the 2.8 6-cylinder M52 petrol.

Frequently asked questions

What does the oil temperature switch do?
The oil temperature switch is a sender in the engine oil circuit that monitors oil temperature. It threads into the engine and reads the temperature of the oil passing it, then sends the signal to the temperature gauge or engine management system. This lets oil temperature be tracked during operation.
Which engines and models use this oil temperature switch?
This oil temperature switch fits the Range Rover L322 2002-2009 with the M62 4.4 V8 petrol or M57 3.0 diesel, where it's fitted above the water pump. It also fits the Defender 1987-2006 with the 2.8 6-cylinder BMW M52 petrol (South African market). Confirm your engine before ordering.
What are the signs of a faulty oil temperature switch?
A faulty oil temperature switch typically shows as an inaccurate or dead oil temperature reading, or a warning light, on the M62 and M57 engines. Because it feeds the gauge or engine management system, a failing sender can misreport the engine's real oil temperature. Replace it if the reading looks wrong or drops out.
