Oil Seal Halves - the early-type rear crankshaft oil seal, supplied as two halves that close around the rear of the crankshaft where it leaves the cylinder block.

The split seal seats in the housing formed between the cylinder block and the rear main bearing cap, sealing the crankshaft journal to stop engine oil escaping into the bellhousing. This is the early bonded split seal used before the later spring-energised retainer design. For 2.0 diesel and 2.25 petrol engines.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Oil Seal Halves part for?
The Oil Seal Halves are the early-type rear crankshaft oil seal, supplied as two halves that close around the rear of the crankshaft where it leaves the cylinder block. They seal the crank journal to stop engine oil escaping into the bellhousing on 2.0 diesel and 2.25 petrol engines.
How is this different from the later rear crank seal?
This is the early bonded split seal, used before the later spring-energised retainer design. The two halves seat in the housing between the cylinder block and rear main bearing cap. Confirm your engine uses the early split-seal arrangement before ordering, as the later housing differs.
Where on the engine does it fit?
The oil seal halves seat in the housing formed between the cylinder block and the rear main bearing cap, around the rear crankshaft journal. It's the rearmost engine seal on Series 2 and 3 2.0 diesel and 2.25 petrol engines, sealing against oil loss into the bellhousing.
Why does the rear crankshaft oil seal fail?
The rear crankshaft oil seal typically fails through age hardening and wear, letting engine oil weep into the bellhousing. Common signs are oil drips at the back of the engine and oil on the clutch housing. It's best replaced whenever the gearbox or clutch is removed, as access is otherwise difficult.
Is this supplied as a complete seal?
Yes, the oil seal halves are supplied as two halves that together form one complete rear crankshaft seal. You need one set per engine. One half seats in the cylinder block and the other in the rear main bearing cap, closing around the crankshaft.
