The anchor plate is the fixed backing plate of the brake: it carries the handbrake shoes and their operating expander mechanism, provides their mounting and pivot points, and closes off the back of the drum against dirt ingress.

Where is the handbrake anchor plate fitted?
The handbrake anchor plate mounts at the rear output of the transfer gearbox, where the Series 2 and 3 transmission drum brake sits. This is a driveline-mounted parking brake, not a wheel brake, so you'll find the plate under the vehicle at the back of the transfer box rather than at a hub.
Why would a handbrake anchor plate need replacing?
Handbrake anchor plates are usually renewed when the original is corroded, worn at the shoe pivot points, or distorted so the shoes no longer sit square against the drum. A worn plate can stop the handbrake holding properly, and on Series Land Rovers it's typically replaced during a full handbrake overhaul.
