Frequently asked questions

What does the Clutch Release Lever do?
The Clutch Release Lever and cross-shaft operate the clutch release bearing inside the gearbox bellhousing on Series Land Rovers. When you press the clutch pedal, the cross-shaft rotates and the lever pushes the bearing against the clutch to disengage drive.
Where does the Clutch Release Lever fit?
The Clutch Release Lever sits in the bellhousing between the clutch pedal linkage and the release bearing on Series IIA and III models, roughly 1963 to 1971. It's a genuine Land Rover part and is normally accessed with the gearbox or bellhousing removed.
Why does the Clutch Release Lever wear out?
Clutch Release Levers typically wear at the pivot points and where the lever meets the release bearing, giving a sloppy or heavy clutch feel. Since it's buried in the bellhousing, it's usually renewed during a clutch overhaul while everything is already apart.
