Retainer – gearbox detent spring retainer plate.

Part of the gearbox gear-selector detent mechanism. It locates and holds the detent spring that loads the selector plunger against the selector shaft, maintaining the spring tension that holds the selected gear engaged and gives the gearchange its positive detent feel.
