Frequently asked questions

What does the conrod bolt do?
The connecting rod bolt clamps the big-end cap to the connecting rod, holding the big-end bearing shells around the crankshaft journal on the Rover 3.5-litre V8. It fits the early non-cross-bolted V8 in the Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
Can conrod bolts be reused?
Conrod bolts are best replaced rather than reused. They're a highly stressed fastener that stretches in service, so fitting new bolts during an engine or big-end bearing rebuild is standard practice. Torque them to the workshop manual specification rather than reusing the old ones.
Does this bolt fit the cross-bolted V8?
This bolt suits the early V8 with a plain big-end cap, not the later cross-bolted V8 used in the Range Rover P38 and Discovery 2. Confirm your block isn't cross-bolted before ordering, as the bolt and cap arrangement differ. Quantity depends on how many rods you're rebuilding.
