Starter Drive Kit is the pinion drive assembly for the Lucas inertia-type (Bendix) starter motor, operating within the engine starting circuit.

When the starter is energised the pinion is thrown along its helical sleeve to mesh with the flywheel ring gear and crank the engine; once the engine fires and overruns the starter, the pinion disengages and returns to its rest position. As the part of the starter that repeatedly engages and releases the flywheel, the drive is a wear item and is replaced when the pinion teeth are worn or the drive no longer engages or frees off cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

What does the starter drive kit do?
The starter drive kit is the pinion drive assembly for the Lucas inertia-type (Bendix) starter motor. When the starter spins, the pinion is thrown along its helical sleeve to mesh with the flywheel ring gear and crank the engine, then springs back out once the engine fires.
Which Land Rover does this starter drive fit?
This starter drive fits the Land Rover Series IIA and III with the 2.25L diesel engine, using the Lucas starter motor. Confirm your starter is the Lucas inertia type before ordering, as pre-engaged starters use a different drive.
When does a starter drive need replacing?
A starter drive typically needs replacing when the pinion teeth are worn or chipped, or when the pinion no longer throws out to engage the flywheel or fails to free off after starting. Symptoms include grinding, whirring without cranking, or the starter staying engaged.
What's the difference between an inertia and a pre-engaged starter drive?
This is the inertia (Bendix) drive, where the pinion is flung along a helical sleeve by the motor spinning up. Pre-engaged starters instead use a solenoid to push the pinion into mesh first. The two aren't interchangeable, so match the drive to your Lucas starter type.
