Drive Unit for the Lucas Type M113 starter motor used on the 2.5L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine.

The drive unit carries the starter pinion together with its overrunning (one-way) clutch. When the starter is energised the pinion travels along the armature shaft to mesh with the flywheel ring gear and crank the engine; once the engine fires the overrunning clutch lets the pinion freewheel, protecting the armature from overspeed until it disengages. Worn pinion teeth or a slipping clutch typically show up as a failure to crank or a whirring starter that spins without turning the engine.
