Gas Strut - Tailgate Gas-charged support strut for the rear tailgate.

The strut mounts between the body aperture and the inner tailgate, using compressed gas in a sealed cylinder to take the weight of the tailgate as it is raised and to hold it open. Supplied individually.

Gas struts lose pressure with age; a tailgate that no longer stays up, or feels heavy to lift, indicates the strut should be renewed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ASR1958 gas strut used for?
The ASR1958 is a gas-charged support strut for the rear tailgate on the Land Rover Freelander 1 (1996-2006). It uses compressed gas in a sealed cylinder to take the tailgate's weight, raising it and holding it open once lifted.
Is the ASR1958 strut sold individually, and should I replace both sides together?
The ASR1958 gas strut is supplied individually. Where a tailgate uses a strut on each side, it's typically best to renew both together so they support the tailgate evenly and one weak strut doesn't overload the other.
Where is the ASR1958 gas strut fitted on a Freelander 1?
The ASR1958 gas strut fits at the rear tailgate of the Freelander 1 (1996-2006), mounting between the body aperture and the inner tailgate. It belongs to the body and chassis group and supports the tailgate as it is raised.
Can the ASR1958 tailgate strut be fitted at home?
Yes, fitting the ASR1958 tailgate strut is typically a straightforward DIY job. The strut usually locates on ball studs held by spring clips, so it can normally be swapped with basic hand tools. Support the tailgate before removing the old strut.
