Plug - a core plug (also known as a Welch, freeze or expansion plug) for the engine block or cylinder head.
It seals the core holes left in the casting after the sand cores are removed during manufacture, retaining coolant within the water jacket. Core plugs are renewed when they corrode or weep, and as a matter of course during an engine overhaul.
