Door Latch Bell Crank is a pivoting lever within the side door latch assembly that transfers actuation from the handle linkage to the latch.

Mounted inside the door behind the latch, the bell crank redirects the motion of the exterior and interior handle rods through a right-angle pivot into the latch release, allowing the door to open reliably. It is a wear component of the door locking mechanism and is replaced when handle operation becomes stiff or the latch fails to release.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Door Latch Bell Crank and what does it do?
The Door Latch Bell Crank is a pivoting lever inside the side door latch that transfers handle movement through a right-angle pivot to release the latch. On the Land Rover Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic it links the exterior and interior handle rods to the latch so the door opens reliably.
Where on the vehicle is the bell crank fitted?
The bell crank sits inside the door behind the latch assembly. On the Defender it's typically used on the rear side door latch of the 110-inch and 130-inch wheelbase. On Discovery 1 it serves the front and rear door locks, and on Range Rover Classic the door locks.
How do I confirm this bell crank fits my vehicle?
This bell crank fits the Land Rover Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic, but fitment has VIN breaks. Discovery 1 runs from (V)FA393361 to (V)WA799999 and Range Rover Classic applies up to (V)HA610293. Check your VIN against these ranges to confirm the correct variant.
Can the bell crank be fitted at home?
Fitting the bell crank is typically a DIY-level job needing basic hand tools. The door casing usually has to come off to reach the latch assembly behind it. Take care to reconnect the handle rods correctly so both the interior and exterior handles operate the latch.
