Primary Timing Chain for the timing drive of the 3.2 and 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, in naturally aspirated and supercharged forms.
The primary chain transmits drive from the crankshaft to the camshaft drive, keeping the camshafts synchronised with the crankshaft so the valves open and close at the correct point in each cycle. A stretched chain or worn tensioner lets the timing drift and produces rattle on start-up; the chain is normally renewed together with its tensioner and guides during a timing overhaul.
