The secondary chain drives the camshafts of one cylinder bank from the intermediate sprocket, working with the primary chain to keep valve timing synchronised with the crankshaft. A stretched chain or worn tensioner lets the timing drift and produces rattle on start-up; the secondary chains are normally renewed together with their tensioners and guides during a timing overhaul.
