Viscous Fan Coupling is the temperature-controlled drive unit between the water pump and the engine cooling fan.

It mounts on the water pump shaft and drives the fan through a silicone-fluid coupling, increasing fan engagement as under-bonnet temperature rises and allowing the fan to freewheel when extra cooling is not needed. This reduces parasitic drag and fan noise once the engine reaches operating temperature.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ERC2849G viscous unit and what does it do?
The ERC2849G is the viscous fan coupling, the temperature-controlled drive between the water pump and the engine cooling fan. It mounts on the water pump shaft and drives the fan through a silicone-fluid coupling, engaging the fan more as under-bonnet temperature rises.
Which models does this viscous coupling fit?
This viscous fan coupling fits the Range Rover Classic (1986-1994) V8 EFI petrol and VM diesel, Discovery 1 V8, and Series 3 Stage 1 V8. Confirm your engine and fan setup, as blade count and coupling type vary across these applications.
What are the signs the viscous coupling has failed?
A failed viscous coupling typically shows as overheating in traffic when it won't lock up, or constant roar and poor fuel economy when it won't release. On these V8 and VM diesel engines a fan that spins freely when hot points to a worn coupling.
