Frequently asked questions

What does the ERC9765 crankshaft pulley do?
The ERC9765 crankshaft pulley mounts on the nose of the crankshaft and drives the engine's accessory belt. As the crank turns, the pulley spins the belt that runs the alternator and cooling fan. It's fitted to Land Rover Defender models up to 2016 with the 2.5L naturally aspirated diesel engine.
Where is the crankshaft pulley fitted?
The crankshaft pulley sits at the front of the engine on the crankshaft nose, the lowest pulley in the accessory drive. The auxiliary belt wraps around it to turn the ancillaries, and it's held by the crankshaft pulley bolt. On the 2.5L diesel it typically also carries the timing reference mark.
What are the signs a crankshaft pulley needs replacing?
A failing crankshaft pulley usually shows up as belt squeal, wobble, or misalignment, and where a bonded rubber damper is fitted the rubber can separate. A damaged pulley can throw or rapidly wear the belt. On the 2.5L diesel Defender, replace it if the belt won't track true or the pulley face is damaged.
