Valve Guide for the V8 petrol engine, fitted in the cylinder head as part of the valvetrain.

The guide is pressed into the head and supports the valve stem, holding the valve in precise alignment with its seat as it opens and closes. It also conducts heat away from the stem into the cylinder head and, together with the valve stem seal, controls oil entry into the port. Worn guides cause increased oil consumption and poor valve sealing, and are renewed during a cylinder head overhaul.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ERR3648 valve guide and what does it do?
The ERR3648 valve guide is a cylinder-head component for the Land Rover V8 petrol engine. It's pressed into the head and supports the valve stem, keeping the valve aligned with its seat as it opens and closes. It also draws heat from the stem into the head and helps control oil entering the port.
How many valve guides are needed for a V8 cylinder head?
Valve guides are sold individually, so a Land Rover V8 needs one for every valve being renewed. The V8 has two valves per cylinder across eight cylinders, so a full overhaul of both heads typically uses sixteen. Order the quantity to match the valves you're refurbishing.
What are the signs a valve guide needs replacing?
Worn valve guides typically show up as increased oil consumption and blue exhaust smoke, because oil slips down the stem into the port. On the V8 they're usually renewed during a cylinder head overhaul, along with the valve stem seals, to restore proper valve sealing and alignment.
Which Land Rover models does this valve guide fit?
This valve guide fits the Land Rover V8 petrol engine in the Defender, Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover Classic and Range Rover P38 (1994-2001). It suits the carburettor and EFI V8 variants, so confirm your engine is the petrol V8 before ordering, as it doesn't fit diesel engines.
Can valve guides be fitted at home?
Valve guides are usually a specialist job rather than a home fit. They're an interference fit pressed into the cylinder head and often reamed to size afterwards, so they typically need a machine shop with a press and the correct reamer. Most DIY builders supply the guides and have a head shop fit them.
