Frequently asked questions

What does the crankshaft pulley do on the Rover V8?
The crankshaft pulley mounts on the nose of the crankshaft on the 3.5L Rover V8 petrol engine and transfers rotation to the auxiliary drive belt. That belt turns engine ancillaries such as the water pump and alternator. It fits the twin-carb and EFI 3.5L V8 in the Defender, Discovery 1, and Range Rover Classic.
Will this pulley fit any Land Rover V8, or only the 3.5L?
This crankshaft pulley is specific to the 3.5L Rover V8 petrol engine in twin-carb and EFI forms. The later 3.9L, 4.0L, and 4.6L V8s typically use a different pulley, so it isn't a universal V8 fit. On Discovery 1 it applies from VIN FA393361 to WA799999.
When should the crankshaft pulley be replaced?
Replace the crankshaft pulley if the belt groove is worn, chipped, or corroded, or if the pulley is bent or shows runout, since that causes belt wear and slip on the 3.5L Rover V8. A wobbling or noisy pulley at the crankshaft nose is a sign to inspect it. Check the keyway and bolt on removal.
