Frequently asked questions

What is the ETC6278Z valve seat insert and what does it do?
The ETC6278Z exhaust valve seat insert is pressed into the cylinder head to provide the hardened sealing face the exhaust valve closes against, maintaining compression and conducting heat from the valve into the head. It fits the 2.25L and 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol engines in the Defender up to 2016.
How many exhaust valve seat inserts do I need?
Four exhaust valve seat inserts are needed per engine, one per cylinder on these 4-cylinder petrol heads. The ETC6278Z is sold individually, so order four for a full head. It's also serviced as part of a kit.
Can the ETC6278Z be fitted at home?
No, fitting a valve seat insert is a specialist machine-shop job, as the insert is pressed and cut into the head to size. These are usually renewed when recutting or converting a head, for example for unleaded fuel.
