Layshaft Bearing for the R380 five-speed manual gearbox. This taper roller bearing supports the layshaft (countershaft) within the gearbox casing, carrying the constant-mesh gear cluster that transmits drive from the input shaft to the mainshaft.

The taper roller design locates the layshaft against both radial and axial load, and its shimming sets the layshaft endfloat. A worn or pitted bearing produces gear-train whine and can allow endfloat that makes gear engagement notchy.

Frequently asked questions

What does the layshaft bearing do in an R380 gearbox?
The layshaft bearing is a taper roller bearing that supports the layshaft, or countershaft, inside the R380 five-speed manual gearbox. It carries the constant-mesh gear cluster that transmits drive from the input shaft to the mainshaft, locating the layshaft against both radial and axial load.
Which Land Rovers use the FTC2385 layshaft bearing?
The FTC2385 fits Land Rovers with the R380 five-speed manual gearbox: Defender (1987-2006), Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover P38 (1994-2001) and Range Rover Classic (1992-1994, from VIN JA610294). It's the taper roller layshaft bearing common to that gearbox.
What are the symptoms of a worn layshaft bearing?
A worn or pitted layshaft bearing typically produces a gear-train whine that changes with road speed. As it wears it can allow layshaft endfloat, which makes gear engagement feel notchy. Left unchecked, bearing failure can damage the gear cluster it supports.
Can the layshaft bearing be replaced at home?
Replacing the layshaft bearing usually means removing and stripping the R380 gearbox, so it's typically a specialist job rather than a quick home fix. Its shimming sets the layshaft endfloat, so the bearing needs to be set up correctly on reassembly.
