Frequently asked questions

What does the FTC2714 2nd gear do in the R380 gearbox?
The FTC2714 is the 2nd gear wheel carried on the mainshaft of the R380 5-speed manual gearbox. It runs in constant mesh with its layshaft gear and transmits drive when the 1st/2nd synchroniser hub locks it to the mainshaft. It's supplied as an individual gear for R380 rebuilds.
Does the FTC2714 2nd gear fit all R380 Defenders?
Not all. On the Land Rover Defender the FTC2714 was fitted to early R380 gearboxes and was superseded by a revised 2nd gear from VIN (G)417153J. If your Defender sits near that change point, check your chassis number to confirm which 2nd gear your box takes before ordering.
Which Land Rovers use the FTC2714 R380 2nd gear?
The FTC2714 fits the R380 5-speed manual gearbox in the Land Rover Defender, Discovery 1, Range Rover Classic, and Range Rover P38. It's specific to the R380, so confirm your vehicle has the R380 rather than the earlier LT77 gearbox before ordering.
What are the signs the R380 2nd gear needs replacing?
A failing 2nd gear typically whines under load, jumps out of gear, or shows chipped and pitted teeth on inspection. On an R380 rebuild it's usually renewed if worn, since damaged teeth can shed debris that wears the synchro, bearings, and other gears in the gearbox.
