Synchro Ring - 5th Gear - R380 is the baulk ring for the 5th gear synchromesh assembly in the R380 5-speed manual gearbox.

The ring equalises the rotational speeds of the mainshaft and the 5th gear before dog engagement, preventing gear clash during upshifts and downshifts into 5th. It contacts the matching cone surface on the 5th gear and is actuated by the shift fork via the synchro hub. Wear on the friction cone face or the baulk teeth causes slow or notchy 5th gear changes and warrants replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What does the FTC2727 5th gear synchro ring do?
The FTC2727 is the baulk (synchro) ring for the 5th gear synchromesh in the R380 5-speed manual gearbox. It equalises the rotational speeds of the mainshaft and 5th gear before dog engagement, preventing gear clash when shifting into 5th. It contacts the friction cone on the 5th gear via the synchro hub.
Which Land Rovers use the R380 5th gear synchro ring FTC2727?
The FTC2727 synchro ring fits the R380 5-speed manual gearbox in the Land Rover Defender, Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover Classic, and Range Rover P38. On the Range Rover Classic the R380 applies from VIN JA610294. Confirm your gearbox is the R380, not the earlier LT77, before ordering.
What are the symptoms of a worn 5th gear synchro ring?
A worn 5th gear synchro ring typically causes slow, notchy, or crunchy shifts into 5th, and sometimes the gear jumping out under load. Wear on the friction cone face or the baulk teeth is the usual cause. Replacing the ring during a rebuild restores clean 5th gear engagement.
How do I know if I need the R380 or LT77 5th synchro ring?
The FTC2727 is specific to the R380 gearbox, while earlier vehicles used the LT77. Check the gearbox casting or your build date to confirm which gearbox you have, as the R380 and LT77 synchro parts don't interchange.
