Reverse Idler Shaft for the R380 5-speed manual gearbox. The shaft carries the reverse idler gear within the gearbox casing.

The reverse idler gear turns on this shaft and is brought into mesh between the mainshaft and layshaft gears when reverse is selected, adding the extra gear that reverses output rotation. Supplied as an individual shaft for rebuild or repair of the R380 transmission.

Frequently asked questions

What does the FTC3850 reverse idler shaft do?
The FTC3850 is the reverse idler shaft for the R380 5-speed manual gearbox. It carries the reverse idler gear inside the gearbox casing. When reverse is selected, that idler gear meshes between the mainshaft and layshaft gears, adding the extra gear that reverses the output rotation.
Which models use this reverse idler shaft?
The reverse idler shaft fits the R380 gearbox used in the Defender (up to 2006), Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover Classic and Range Rover P38. It's an internal transmission component, reached only with the gearbox stripped down.
What are the signs the reverse idler shaft is worn?
Wear typically shows as a noisy or crunchy reverse, or reverse jumping out, as the idler gear and its shaft wear. On a high-mileage R380 the shaft is usually inspected during a rebuild and renewed if the bearing surface is scored, which restores clean reverse engagement.
