Differential Bearing Shim for the axle differential assembly. The shim fits behind a differential carrier bearing in the axle casing.

It sets the carrier bearing preload and the carrier position that governs crown wheel-to-pinion backlash, selected during assembly to bring the gear mesh within specification. Supplied as an individual shim for differential setup, rebuild or repair.

Frequently asked questions

What is the FTC3889 differential bearing shim for?
The FTC3889 is a differential bearing shim for the axle differential. It fits behind a differential carrier bearing in the axle casing and sets the carrier bearing preload, which in turn controls the crown wheel to pinion backlash. It's selected on assembly to bring the gear mesh into specification.
Which axles and models use this shim?
This shim is used in the front and rear differentials of the Defender (up to 2006), Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic. On the Defender it applies to the front axle from VIN VA930435 and the rear axle from VA390456, so check your chassis number against those breaks.
How is the correct shim selected and fitted?
Differential shims like the FTC3889 come in a range of thicknesses and are chosen to suit each axle during setup. Fitting one correctly means measuring backlash and bearing preload with a dial gauge as the diff is built, so it's typically a job for someone experienced with differential rebuilds.
