The pads locate in the caliper carrier and are clamped against the brake disc by the caliper pistons, converting wheel rotation into braking force. They are a wear item and should be replaced as a complete axle set, with the discs inspected for thickness, scoring and run-out at the same time.

New pads require a bedding-in period before they reach their full working friction level.
