Heater Matrix is the cabin heat exchanger housed within the heater box of the HVAC system. Engine coolant is circulated through its core while the blower draws cabin air across the fins, transferring heat from the coolant to the air delivered to the vents.

It sits downstream of the blower inside the heater assembly. A corroded or internally blocked matrix reduces cabin heat output and can weep coolant into the footwell, which is the usual reason for replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What does the heater matrix do on a Freelander 1?
The heater matrix is the cabin heat exchanger inside the heater box of the Freelander 1. Engine coolant flows through its core while the blower pushes cabin air across the fins, transferring heat to the air sent to the vents. It's what produces warm air inside the car.
What are the signs a Freelander 1 heater matrix needs replacing?
Common signs are weak cabin heat, a sweet coolant smell inside, fogging on the inside of the windscreen, or damp coolant in the passenger footwell. These point to a matrix that's internally blocked or leaking. Left unchecked it can drain coolant and overheat the engine.
Does this heater matrix fit all Freelander 1 models?
This heater matrix fits the Freelander 1 from 1997 to 2006 across all engines from VIN 1A000001 onward. Fitment is common to the range, but confirm your VIN falls within the production range before ordering.
Is JEF500010 the same as this heater matrix?
JEF500010 is listed as an alternative part number for this Freelander 1 heater matrix. The two cross-reference to the same application, so either code covers the same heater box position. Confirm by VIN if you're unsure which your car was built with.
