Evaporator Matrix for the air conditioning system.

The evaporator matrix forms the heat-exchange core of the air conditioning circuit, housed inside the HVAC unit in the vehicle interior. Refrigerant enters the matrix in its low-pressure state and absorbs heat from the incoming air stream, causing it to evaporate. This process cools and dehumidifies the cabin air before it is delivered through the ventilation outlets.

A faulty or leaking evaporator matrix results in loss of cooling performance and refrigerant loss from the system.

Frequently asked questions

What does the evaporator matrix do in the air conditioning system?
The evaporator matrix is the heat-exchange core of the air conditioning system on the Land Rover Defender. Low-pressure refrigerant passes through it and absorbs heat from the cabin air stream, cooling and dehumidifying the air before it reaches the vents. It sits inside the HVAC unit in the interior.
What are the signs the evaporator matrix needs replacing?
Loss of cooling performance and gradual refrigerant loss are the main signs a Defender evaporator matrix is failing. A leaking matrix lets refrigerant escape from the sealed circuit, so the system stops cooling. Because it's inside the HVAC unit, replacement typically means dashboard removal.
Which Defenders does this evaporator matrix fit?
This evaporator matrix fits the Land Rover Defender from 1987-2006 with automatic air conditioning using R134a refrigerant, up to VIN XA159807. Check your chassis number against this break before ordering, as later builds can differ.
Is the evaporator matrix a DIY fitting job?
Replacing the evaporator matrix is typically a specialist job on the Defender, since it's housed inside the HVAC unit and usually requires dashboard removal to access. The air conditioning system also has to be discharged and recharged by a technician with R134a handling equipment.
