EGR Cooler for the 2.2L DOHC DW12 turbo diesel engine, part of the exhaust gas recirculation circuit.

The cooler is a coolant-fed heat exchanger: exhaust gas drawn off for recirculation passes through it and gives up heat to the engine coolant before it is returned to the inlet tract. Lowering the temperature of the recirculated gas increases its density and reduces peak combustion temperature, which is how the EGR system limits NOx emissions.

Cracking or internal blockage of the matrix shows up as coolant loss, white exhaust smoke or restricted EGR flow.
