Starter Motor - the pre-engaged starter that cranks the engine, bolted to the bellhousing face at the engine-to-gearbox joint.

The integral solenoid does two jobs at once: it throws the drive pinion into mesh with the flywheel or flexplate ring gear, and closes the main contacts that feed the motor windings. A one-way clutch in the drive releases as soon as the engine fires, so the running engine cannot back-drive the armature. Worn brushes or pitted solenoid contacts typically show as a single click with no cranking, or as slow cranking on a battery known to be good.

Used on the 5.0L V8 AJ133 petrol engine in naturally aspirated and supercharged form.
