It mounts on the fan drive and varies fan engagement in response to cooling demand, driving the fan when coolant and under-bonnet temperatures are high and letting it freewheel when cooling is not required, which reduces parasitic drag and noise. Fitted to the 4.2L V8 supercharged petrol engine (AJ).

Renew when the coupling seizes, slips or locks permanently, shown as overheating or a persistent fan roar.
