Axle Breather Vent Pipe for the front axle drive unit.

It vents the pressure that builds inside the front differential housing as the axle warms, equalising internal pressure and preventing lubricant from being forced past the seals. Routed from the axle to a higher point to keep water and contaminants out of the differential.

What is the Axle Breather Vent Pipe used for?
The Axle Breather Vent Pipe vents pressure from the front axle drive unit (differential) housing. As the axle warms, internal pressure rises and the pipe equalises it to prevent oil being forced past the seals. It fits the Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320.
Where does the breather pipe run?
This vent pipe runs from the top of the front differential up to a higher point away from water and mud, so the axle can breathe without drawing in water when wading. On the Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320 it protects the front diff seals.
What happens if the breather pipe is blocked?
If the breather pipe is blocked or perished, pressure builds in the front axle and typically pushes oil past the pinion or hub seals, and a submerged open breather can draw water into the diff oil. A clear, correctly routed pipe keeps the front differential sealed.
