Diesel Exhaust Fluid (AdBlue) is a consumable fluid for the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment system on diesel engines.

It is a high-purity 32.5% aqueous urea solution that is metered into the exhaust stream upstream of the SCR catalyst, where it reacts with oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and converts them into nitrogen and water to help the engine meet diesel emissions standards. It is held in the vehicle's dedicated DEF tank and replenished periodically.

Which vehicles need AdBlue?

Does AdBlue go in the diesel fuel tank?
No. AdBlue goes into its own dedicated DEF tank, separate from the diesel fuel tank and usually filled through a blue cap. Adding it to the diesel tank can cause serious damage, so it must only go in the AdBlue filler.
How is AdBlue topped up?
AdBlue is replenished periodically through the vehicle's DEF filler into the dedicated tank, and the system meters it into the exhaust automatically while driving. Watch the dashboard AdBlue range warning and top up before the tank runs empty to avoid a no-restart condition.
