Brake Pad Wear Warning Wire for the rear brake pad wear-indicator circuit.

Routes against the rear brake pad and forms part of the electrical wear-warning loop. As the friction material reaches its wear limit, the brake disc abrades the wire and breaks the circuit, illuminating the brake pad wear warning on the instrument cluster to prompt pad replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What does the brake pad wear warning wire do?
The brake pad wear warning wire is the rear brake pad wear sensor. It routes against the rear pad as part of an electrical loop; when the friction material wears down, the disc abrades the wire and breaks the circuit, lighting the brake pad wear warning on the dash to prompt pad replacement.
How many wear wires are needed and when should it be replaced?
This is the rear brake wear wire, and typically one is fitted per axle on these models. Replace it whenever the rear brake pads are renewed, since the old wire is usually already abraded or has triggered the warning. Fitting new pads without a new sensor often leaves the warning light on.
Which Land Rovers does this rear brake wear wire fit?
This rear brake pad wear wire fits the New Defender L663, Discovery 5 (from VIN JA000001), Range Rover L405 (2013-2022, from GA000001), Range Rover Sport L494 (2014-2022, from FA000001, incl. SVR) and Range Rover Sport L461 (2023+). It suits rear brakes with 18, 19 or 20-inch discs.
What happens if the brake pad wear warning is ignored?
Ignoring the brake pad wear warning risks running the rear pads down to the backing plate, which damages the brake discs and reduces braking performance. On these models the wire breaks the circuit only once the pads are near their limit, so the warning means pad replacement is due soon.
