Front Axle Drive Shaft transmits torque from the front differential output to the front wheel hub, forming part of the front driveline assembly.

The shaft carries a constant velocity joint at each end - an inboard joint that accommodates suspension travel and shaft plunge at the differential, and an outboard joint that allows the wheel to be driven through the full steering lock. Each joint runs in grease behind a sealed boot; a split boot lets the grease escape and contamination in, which is the usual cause of joint wear and of the clicking under lock that follows it.

The outboard end splines into the wheel hub and is retained by the hub nut.
