Coolant Expansion Tank Cap - pressure cap sealing the coolant expansion (overflow) container in the engine cooling circuit.

The cap is a working component rather than a simple closure. Its spring-loaded relief valve holds the cooling system at its designed operating pressure, which raises the boiling point of the coolant and stops the water pump cavitating under sustained load. Above the rated pressure the valve lifts and vents the excess; a second, smaller vacuum valve opens as the engine cools so coolant and air can be drawn back into the system instead of collapsing hoses.

A perished seal or a weakened relief spring lets the circuit run at low pressure, which typically presents as gradual coolant loss, overheating only under load, or a coolant smell with no traceable leak. Renewing the cap whenever the expansion tank or a major cooling component is replaced is normal practice.
