Frequently asked questions

What does the outer wing do on a Defender?
The outer wing is the visible front body panel over the wheel arch on the Land Rover Defender, covering the left hand side. It forms the outer skin between the bonnet line and the sill and locates against the front body structure, so it is replaced as a complete unit rather than sectioned.
Why do Defender outer wings need replacing?
Corrosion and impact damage are the usual reasons. Defender wings sit directly behind the front wheel and take constant spray, mud and stone strike, so the lower edge and the joint against the bulkhead typically corrode first. Off road contact and parking damage account for most of the rest.
Can an outer wing be fitted at home?
Yes, for most Defender owners this is a home job. The wing is a bolt on panel, so it usually comes off with hand tools once the lamps, trim and wing top fittings are disconnected. Expect seized fasteners on an older vehicle, and check alignment against the bonnet and door before final tightening.
