Upper Sump Gasket for the 2.0L Td4 diesel engine, forming the oil-tight joint between the upper sump and the base of the cylinder block.

The Td4 uses a two-piece sump assembly: a structural aluminium upper sump casting bolted to the bottom of the cylinder block, with a pressed-steel lower sump pan beneath it. This gasket seals the mating face between the upper sump casting and the block, retaining oil within the lubrication circuit and maintaining crankcase sealing.

Frequently asked questions

What does the upper sump gasket do on a Freelander 1 Td4?
The upper sump gasket seals the aluminium upper sump casting to the base of the cylinder block on the 2.0 Td4 (M47) diesel in the Freelander 1 (1997-2006). It keeps oil sealed within the lubrication circuit at the bottom of the engine.
Do I need the lower sump gasket as well?
Usually yes. The Td4 uses a two-piece sump, so the upper sump casting and the pressed-steel lower pan each have their own gasket. When the sump is dropped both faces are typically disturbed, so most workshops renew both gaskets in the same job.
How do I know the upper sump gasket needs replacing?
Oil weeping or dripping from the joint between the upper sump and the block is the usual sign on the Td4. Gaskets harden and shrink with heat and age, so it's typically renewed whenever the sump is removed for cleaning, oil pump access, or a leak repair.
