Lower Sump Gasket for the 2.0L Td4 diesel engine, sealing the lower sump pan to the upper sump casting.

The Td4 uses a two-piece sump assembly: a structural aluminium upper sump bolted to the cylinder block, with a pressed-steel lower sump pan beneath it that holds the engine oil. This gasket forms the oil-tight joint between the lower pan and the upper sump, preventing leakage at the base of the lubrication system.

Frequently asked questions

What does the lower sump gasket do on a Freelander 1 Td4?
The lower sump gasket seals the pressed-steel lower sump pan to the aluminium upper sump casting on the 2.0 Td4 (M47) diesel in the Freelander 1 (1997-2006). It forms the oil-tight joint at the very base of the engine where the oil is held.
Is this the same as the upper sump gasket?
No. The Td4 has a two-piece sump, so the lower pan and the upper casting each take a different gasket. This is the lower gasket, between the steel pan and the upper sump. The upper sump gasket seals the casting to the cylinder block and is a separate part.
When should the lower sump gasket be replaced?
Replace the lower sump gasket whenever the steel sump pan is removed, for example to clean the pan, clear the oil pickup, or cure an oil leak. Oil seeping from the joint between the pan and the upper sump on the Td4 typically means the gasket has hardened.
