Brand Autotec Components
Oxygen Sensor - Front is the upstream (pre-catalyst) lambda sensor in the exhaust system of the petrol engine.

Threaded into the exhaust downpipe ahead of the catalytic converter, it measures the oxygen content of the exhaust gas and reports it to the engine management ECU. The ECU uses this signal to trim fuelling in closed-loop operation, holding the air/fuel mixture at the stoichiometric ratio for efficient combustion and correct catalyst operation.

Frequently asked questions

What does the front oxygen sensor do?
The Front Oxygen Sensor is the upstream (pre-catalyst) lambda sensor in the exhaust. Threaded into the downpipe ahead of the catalytic converter, it measures the oxygen in the exhaust gas and reports to the ECU, which trims fuelling in closed-loop to hold the air/fuel mixture at the correct ratio.
Which vehicles does the front oxygen sensor fit?
The Front Oxygen Sensor fits the Land Rover Freelander 1 (1997-2006) 2.5L KV6 petrol and Range Rover P38 (1994-2001) 4.0L and 4.6L V8 petrol. It's the upstream sensor for these engines. Confirm you need the front (pre-catalyst) sensor rather than the rear before ordering.
What are the signs the front oxygen sensor needs replacing?
Front oxygen sensors typically fail from age, heat cycling, or contamination from burning oil or coolant. Common signs are rough running, poor fuel economy, a check engine light or a failed emissions test. A slow sensor upsets fuelling, so it's usually replaced once it stops switching correctly.
